Coastal Currents Workshop - Natural Dyeing
COASTAL CURRENTS - THE ART OF NATURE IN THE HOME
NATURAL DYEING WORKSHOP
Thursday 12th September, 6pm to 8pm | Cost: £30 | Host: Lara Hailey
Reste, 58 High Street, The Old Town, Hastings TN34 3EN
Historically all textiles would have been dyed with natural dyes until the late 1800’s when the first synthetic dyes were introduced. People used common locally available plants to produce a wide variety of subtle colours. We will discuss the different parts of plants that can be used and where they can be found around your home, in your garden or foraging. Natural dyeing is fun and eco friendly way to bring the colour from nature into your home.
In this two-hour session you will be introduced to the process of natural dyeing. You will be shown how to prepare a dye bath, understand the importance of scouring and mordanting the fabric before dyeing and the different way of treating cellulose and protein fibres. In addition you will be taught a couple of shibori techniques that will create additional pattern on your naturally dyed samples.
Lara Hailey is a textile artist and tutor. She has been working in the field since completing her MA in textiles at Goldsmiths College. Along with her own practise she has run a wide range of textile and art related workshops in galleries, museums, gardens and festivals.
