With its thistle like structure and orange flowers, Carthamus is sometimes referred to as false saffron or Safflower. Safflower is one of humanities oldest crops. Ancient textiles have been found that have been dyed using safflower and flower garlands made from safflowers were discovered in the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun.
Today this flower is commercially grown for its oil and the flowers are still used to create natural dyes. They can be slightly prickly so take care when handling.
