The Mchanga Cloud basket is hand woven in South Western Kenya. The craftswomen who produce each basket work as part of a group of rural weaving cooperatives, using the skills passed to them by family matriarchs. These weavers meet weekly with their managers to arrange work, deliver completed orders and pick up wages.
The Kenyan sisal grass is sourced ready-rolled for the weavers, and is then hand-dyed in large vats before weaving begins. The classic twining method is used to produce the Mchanga Cloud basket: an intricate weave which uses two strands woven simultaneously around a central spoke.
Following all the key principles of fair trade, working with cooperatives in Africa empowers women to earn a flexible income in the dry seasons, where subsistence farming can fail to meet the needs of the family.
